This fic takes place after (01) Ink and Wood (02) Slant of Light (03) Portraits (04) Stray Dogs and (05) Halo, which you can all find if you scroll down/ctrl+f the master fic list post. "Halo Round the Moon" is the only one you really have to read to understand it, but why would you stop there? ;D
/Shameless self-pimpage over.
( Rather rambly but semi-interesting author's note cont'd! )
( And now, the story! )
I wrote fi-fic? Wha? How did this happen? And fluffy J/B at that? The world must be coming to an end.
Cars and Guitars. Jacob/Bella. Jacob tries to keep on driving, as if that's enough to leave the past behind. Funny how that never really works. Post-Eclipse, AU-ish. BD? What BD? Title from a Tori Amos song, fic inspired by Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Warnings for severely sickening fluff.
if anyone has been wandering why i've disappeared lately, this is a very good answer right here:

PREMISE: The year is 1976, and the students of Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are returning for the start of a new term. Whispers about Voldemort have become louder. Hatred over blood purity has grown violent. Rivalries have formed between Houses, within Houses, on Quidditch pitches, in classrooms. Rumours have run the gamut from Hogsmeade dates to the latest Death Eater Attack. Students are making allegiances to groups that they're too young to join. But why should that stop them? Hogwarts itself is on the cusp of rebellion. Times like these inevitably bring out the best and worst of people. Every decision has far-reaching consequences that are too complex to calculate, but in a time of confusion and panic, nobody can afford to be indifferent to the escalating tide of war. Now is the time to stand and be counted. Now is the time for action. What will your character choose under the pressure: the difficult or the easy path? Exactly what is the right path? Magic or might? And is every path really what it seems? WANTED: Andromeda Black, Amycus Carrow, Amos Diggory, Frank Longbottom, Sturgis Podmore, Fabian Prewett, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Ted Tonks, Arthur Weasley, and MANY more! |
The long answer: It has to be Star Wars (the original trilogy of IV, V, and VI) for the six-year-old in me whose first concept of romance was shaped by Han/Leia rather than Disney princesses, for the freakin' LIGHT sabres, for every single one of Yoda's lines in Empire (which I still have imprinted into my brain), for John Willliams' sweeping score and the invention of SFX, for the story that's grand and epic but so simple it's almost laughable: the Battle Between Good and Evil. Its brightly coloured archetypes - the wide-eyed All American farm boy, the tough-talking princess, the charming, sleazy mercenary cowboy, a democratic rebellion against an evil empire - are so hokey and earnest that there is something loveable about it, like a handstitched stuffed rabbit. And think about this: R2-D2 is one of the most entertaining characters in the movie, and all he does is beep. How fantastic is that?
Battlestar Galactica... where do I begin? A huge cast of beautifully complex characters, Greek gods and the Iliad and the Odyssey and now the Bible, superbly constructed conflict, moral ambiguity up the wazoo, heart attacks with every revelation since it pumps up the intensity like nothing else, dark dark dark sci fi that always asks the tough questions about what it means to be human and to be worthy of surviving: these things are my cup of tea. As a remake of the old BSG, post-Star Wars but harkening back to the darker sci fi and fantasy novels of the sixties, it trashes every single naive and over-simplified shred of idealism that Star Wars engenders. And I love it. I laugh, I cry, I get stressed to the max, I occasionally squee, I swear at the TV, I go into cardiac arrest, I am blown away. My friends and I spend almost as much time debating the issues and the choices in BSG as we do watching the damn thing. Also, I would love any show that introduces the word 'frak' into my vocab.
Serenity/Firefly gets a special nod for being a wonderfully odd mix of things, all sort of slapped together in this rather fun, higgledy piggledy way, much like the world that the series takes place in. I really wish Joss Whedon could've had more of a free rein to do what he wanted with this, which was to make it much darker and character-based, not as much gunslinging fun and witty one-liners - although the one lines are fantastic. Wash's dinosaur drama is still the best character intro/expositional plot bit that I have ever seen or probably ever will see.
And if we're going to talk sci fi Westerns, then I have to mention Cowboy Bebop. I know no other anime that has the same kind of utterly eclectic mix of maybe every movie, TV, and music genre ever, but still manages to hold it all together. With music by Yoko Kanno, what's not to worship?

So I was on a podcast more than a month ago. WHAT. Or rather a few of my fics were. Check it out. I just stumbled across this and listened to it tonight. It was good fun, but unnerving, like eavesdropping on a conversation that someone is having about you and it was sort of uncanny how they got so many things right. XD
What made it even stranger is that it's an Edward/Bella site and the only reason I ever wrote "Red Apple Falls" was because
Because of the podcast (I'm assuming), I see some new faces/names amongst my friendly friends. I don't mind the friending, but if you've added me in the past month and a half or so, just drop me a line and intro yourself, eh? Just tell me your name, why the adding and, oh, let's say at least one toy that you loved in childhood but has since then been lost, and one song that you've had stuck in your head for more than three days.
Example!
ophelietta (chen).
i added because i am me. also, because i am awesome.
i'm going to cheat and do more than one toy. i had these circus animals, a brown-gold lion and a light blue elephant (why light blue? why do they lie to children about the real colour of elephants? are they afraid they'll raise a generation of children who love grayscale instead of technicolour?), along with a little green circus train car. why the circus was a train, i don't know.
i've had "i've seen it all" by bjork (not feist XD) from the movie dancer in the dark stuck in my head for at least a week now. check out the youtube video of the number, it is tres awesome. don't watch the entire movie unless you want the sound of music forever tainted with amazing depressing-ness.
Also I dropped by
Still haven't read BD. Don't plan to. La la la la la la.
Anyway. This, eh, resurgence of Twilight news and nostalgia is making my fingers twitchy. If I were (hypothetically) to write one more Twilight fic, anybody got any spare ideas kicking around? Plot bunnies up for adoption? Pleas? Demands? XD
So little marshmallows, it’s been a long wee while since I’ve last popped up on LJ, mostly because university sucks out my brains, but also because of some shifts in perspective, about stories and about Twilight and the fandom as a whole. Even though I’m not actively writing Twilight fanfiction anymore, people still review – always infinitely surprising, considering the quicksilver and almost merciless nature of both internet speeds and minor LJ fame, where anything from more than two hours ago is already dated – and I’ve felt badly that I haven’t yet responded to those reviews.
I will respond to those reviews, individually, no matter how old they are, but for now, here’s a sort of general answer as to why I ghosted away, disguised as a more general essay about Twilight, fanfiction, Jacob/Bella, and the craft of story writing. Oh, don’t let the word count scare you away, babettes – I’ll try to be as relevant as possible, and hopefully stumble into being entertaining here and there.

- Kill Jared.
